Hypnagogic peacock

At the edge of sleep the mind conjures images it did not choose. Dreams in embryo. The eye catching movement at the periphery, the hand reaching for something not quite there.

The peacock carries its eyes in its tail. A peripheral gazer. Watching the edges where the strange things appear in multitude. Seeing what direct attention cannot fix.

This is where Hypnagogic Peacock lives. In the peripheral vision of knowledge. The writing that arrives sideways, that knows something before it can say what it knows, that sees what the forward-looking eye misses.

We publish what arrives at the edge of sight.

Vesical work. Work that occupies the threshold between writing genres - poetry and memoir, essay and short story, review and fiction, the blur of literary form. Work that occupies the threshold between the literary and the scholarly -surrealist criticism, academic argument in a list poem, metafictional narrative on a philosophical concept, the hybrid text where the critical and the creative are indistinguishable. Work that occupies the threshold between disciplines - practice-based research, transdisciplinary inquiry, the investigation of a question that no single discipline can contain.

We do not care whether you consider yourself a writer, a researcher, an academic or an artist. We care whether your work is genuinely vesical - whether it produces something that neither of its elements alone could produce. If your work has not found a home elsewhere because the available homes were not built for it, send it here.

We do not ask what category your work belongs to. We ask what space it occupies that neither of its elements occupies alone.

Hypnagogic Peacock is editorially curated rather than peer reviewed. Named editors, published criteria, genuine feedback with every decision.
